No Work? What Now?

Episode # 327

Air Date: 8/8/2024

No Work-What Now

There is a new reality that must be shared. It is derived from talking to directors, producers and talent reps over the past few weeks. This might be difficult to hear at first glance, but full disclosure is really important to me. I’ve been hearing that there is a noticeable slowdown happening within the industry. Less production, fewer projects, and less work for everyone. I notice it too. Many of our casting projects have slowed to a crawl. Trying to get films financed, theatres to consider bigger cast shows, talent loosing representation. Like I said, this is a first glance though. We need to consider a better perspective, look into this, and stop saying, “No work? Now what!” This is Casting Actors Cast.

Reality bits not reality bites- Look at the bigger picture with true/false questions:

1.     The writers strike and new contract really killed production-FALSE

2.     Streaming services took a big $ hit and slowed new product additions-TRUE

3.     Regional theatres are struggling since Covid-Partially TRUE/Partially FALSE

4.     Actors are the only ones taking the hit-FALSE

5.     Independent films are picking up the slack-TRUE

6.     Broadway is dyeing-FALSE

7.     New media and technology are picking up the slack-POSSIBLY

Change is inevitable, and suffering an option

1.     New financial shift for investors wanting to get into small films

2.     Regional theatres being used more for Broadway tryouts

3.     Writers are writing. It never stops

4.     Reality television is becoming viable for actors/personalities

5.     Performers are finding new ways to tell stories/perform

Steps to a health perspective:

1.     Look at the big picture

2.     Identify the problem then create a solution-new agents/new projects/new venues

3.     Re-ignite learning and find creativity in everything

4.     Remember it is only temporary.

5.     Be ready-don’t let motivation take a backseat to feeling half-empty
