Re-act to Emotions
There have been some Netflix movies and series that I binged over the past few weeks. I’m seeing a ton of good acting and casting for these new shows. There is the usual dragon slayer/costume drama/historical non-fiction. It’s fun! But I must tell you that what has impressed me the most is the acting. Authentic portrayals from a variety of actors and acting styles that make the storytelling quite compelling. I began to really study what is really happening with the actors I am most impressed with. It might be a simple observation on my part but I really think it is a great subject for today’s podcast. Let's look at how we re-act our emotions.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so the theory goes, but many times actors fail to break down the emotional content so the r-acting is obligatory and not spontaneous. Here are some tips to think about and try:
· Subtext is an emotion and not a conversation
· Find the opposite emotion first and approach it from that perspective
· Process what you are hearing and then the effect it has on you and act that
· Re-acting is not re-creating the emotion but experiencing the moment with emotion
· Apply the humor lens to discover new approaches
· Fill the moments with feelings and not thoughts (entirely)
Re-acting is also aligned with being in the moment
· Every moment is a new opportunity to re-act
· Choices are not always linear, explore the unexpected
· Connect with your own life experience as a filter
· Re-acting can also change the energy and mood of the moment
The biggest challenge for understanding what it is to re-act:
· Watching yourself
· Commit to the choices you make
· Internal choices do not always have to be shown
When you trust your choices you can explore a myriad of opportunities for your re-acting. You can react or you can re-act with emotion and authenticity.
